Prompt: Describe a meaningful family tradition unique to your culture and explain how it mirrors or contrasts with the cultural identity themes of expectations and roles in "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid.

Prompt Response: Whenever my grandparents visit they always bring scratch offs for the lottery. They have been doing this longer than I can remember. The logical reason why they did this was it was cheap, and provided a great deal of entertainment to children in the hopes of winning thousands. Now I am 18 years old and they still do it. What the tradition represents now is you are never above a little fun even if very unprofitable. Scratch offs are a simple way just to appreciate the little things off finding a quarter around the house in the hopes of maybe winning 20 bucks since my expectations are more realistic now.

Summary: In class we finished up the four discussion questions for "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid. Along with took our pictures for our school ID's.

Reflection: I learned that I do not have many "family traditions" and those I do have are so mundane I had to think for a good while to come up with. I suppose the meaningful stuff can often be forgettable or so normal you don't think of it.

Prompt: Pretend you are writing a blog entry as Celie; the moment you uncover the hidden letters. Describe what you would think, say, and do, and how this discovery would reshape how you see Mister and yourself. Reflect on why this moment would matter so much and how it would change your next choices.

In "The Lamb" and "The Tyger", both poems suggest that beauty and danger can come from the same source. Describe a time when something or someone you admired also scared or challenged you. How did that experience change the way you see the world or the idea of “goodness”?
