Prompt: Reflect on the simile and metaphor worksheet. Which topic challenged you the most when creating your figurative language, and why? In your response, explain what made that topic difficult and how you worked through the challenge (or what you might do differently next time).

 Prompt Response: The topic that challenged me the most was mental or emotional struggles prompt. When answering the prompt finding a way to explain my thoughts and feelings in a comprehensible way to someone other than myself was strange. Its hard to explain why something is mentally harder for one person versus another. I worked through it by focusing on the larger picture instead of the details, which although a bit more shallow provided a more presentable answer.  Summary: In class we went over the simile and metaphor paper.  Reflection: When you try and explain what is going on inside your mind, for me its one of the harder things. I don't find trouble see how other's minds works, but trying to explain how mine works to another person is a different matter. I can do it, its just awkward. 

Prompt: Today you created similes and metaphors that reflect your struggles, growth, and resilience. In a well-developed paragraph, reflect on the process. What did you learn about yourself while writing your figurative language?

 Prompt Response: I am a very stubborn person. I often have to learn things the hard way if I don’t immediately pick up on it. This has led to developing my own inner strength which serves me well today. Just because you may go through a lot doesn’t mean it defines you. What it does is give a better definition to your image.  Summary: In class we finished reading our poem then wrote 6 similes and 6 metaphors about various triumphs and negatives in our lives.  Reflection: Inner strength was not something I was born with. I was an extremely weak person who struggled to do anything above the bare minimum for a long time. What changed was my self-talk. When I gave myself positive affirmations and despite some of them being lies it gave me enough strength to form habits that kept building on myself. Now I have willpower to spare for the hard stuff, because it's not all wasted getting me out of the bed in the morning to attempt to eat something. 

Prompt: Describe how you spent your time, any activities, traditions, travel, hobbies, or moments that stood out to you. You may also discuss something new you tried, something you learned, or how the break helped you reset before returning to school. Keep your response appropriate for a school setting and focus on experiences you are comfortable sharing publicly

 Prompt Response: I bought my car right as break started. Once we got it home the clutch broke. I spent the first days of break figuring out what could be wrong with it learning different car parts and expanding my knowledge. About 2 days later from the car breaking I figured out it was an issue with the slave cylinder and master cylinder. My poking around the car proved it. I soon ordered the parts and began to work. Now I'm experiencing a super niche issue where the slave cylinder's wire is stuck on the knob and I need an extremely specific wrench to attempt to pry it off with force. I also need a hand drill to get the lug nuts off my car's tire so I can fully remove the master cylinder. What I've learned is problems take time. You can't always fix something in one day, and it will take the time it takes. Prompt: If you had to describe how you show love using only three objects (for example: a playlist, a hoodie, a late-night snack, a long text message, etc.), what would you choose and why? Explain what each object represents and how it connects to your personality.

 Prompt Response: Three times I use to show love are my car, a playlist, and long messages/letters. I love driving and its my personal time. I use it to get away from everything. So when I want someone to drive with me its a way of letting them into my world. For the playlist, I love music and I'm constantly expanding my horizon for music. So if someone is on my mind a lot I tend to subconsciously make them a playlist they would like. That way when we're together I have something to listen to that they'll like. For the long messages/letters, those are rare. I hardly ever write long messages like that but when I do they are completely honest and unfiltered. Its some of the purest form of affection I can express.  Summary: In class we had a free day, and finished editing our documents for our oral presentation if needed.  Reflection: The way I show love is through my actions and spending time. When I don't care about someone I want to avoid them like the plague. But once ...

Prompt: Consider your experience reading The Color Purple (a fictional novel), Fences (a play/drama), and Wild (a nonfiction memoir). Which type of longer text did you enjoy the most, the novel, the play, or the memoir, and which did you find the most challenging? Explain your preference, describe what made that type of text more engaging or accessible for you, and reflect on how understanding your preference might influence how you approach future readings.

 Prompt Response: I enjoyed Wild the most because I can connect with the themes of that story better. For example I can sympathize with losing family members and just wanting to drop off the face of the Earth to hike in the wilderness. While the Color Purple was the most challenging for me because of how out of this world it was for me. Celie has a completely different experience in life compared to me in a completely different time. I cannot imagine the abuse she must have endured. I am compelled by the novel, sure but it's an ugly book which I am thankful I can’t relate to. What made Wild more accessible to me was the more modern style of writing which I experience more often making it easier for me to quickly pick up on themes and such. I also like hiking a good bit, and in my opinion because of how Cheryl portrays herself she is much more compelling to read about versus Celie. For me, reading about Celie was sort of boring because of how it felt like she was waiting for life to...

Prompt: Even if you have not presented yet, how did participating as a listener, note-taker, or responder during the Interactive Oral help you prepare for your own discussion?

 Prompt Response: It gave me an idea of what to expect and how flow works between the people. Those who had assigned roles knew how and when to bounce off one another better.  Summary: In class we listened to another group present their project this time on chapter 11.  Reflection: Wherever you see examples of someone doing something first it makes the process of doing it yourself less stressful because you know what to expect. It helps eliminate the unexpected so you can be more clear and forward with presenting. 

Prompt: In the spirit of Valentine’s Day week, describe your idea of a perfect day spent with someone you care about (a friend, family member, or significant person in your life).

 Prompt Response: My ideal day with my girlfriend would be moving around a lot. I would like to hit up a coffee shop. So both of us could get coffee first then head to some store I know she could get lost in for hours. Maybe get a small meal while we are out. The most important thing to me is spending time with her so no matter what we do I’ll be doing great.  Summary: In class we listened to the first group presentation about chapter 10.  Reflection: I like spending time with people I care about more than what we are doing. I like to see them happy, and that makes me happy. So even if it's a store or an event I’m not huge on I’ll still get an immense amount of joy watching them enjoy themselves. 

Prompt: What is the best piece of advice that your parent or guardian have given you? Tell what the advice was and what prompted you to ask the question.

 Prompt Response: I remember asking my dad did he enjoy school, during a time where I was falling behind and hating it. I remember he sat his fork and food down at the table and crossed his arms and sat back in his chair. He said learn to love the material, not the teachers, not the people. When you love the feeling of learning despite your environment or how you feel outside of learning. When you love learning it becomes easy, and it is a delusion to love all of it. Though going into it expecting to love it and doing it as you love it. Makes learning and the acquiring of information much easier.   Summary: In class for Black History Month we read a poem called Mother to Son by Langston Hughes. We then as a class answered questions about what certain words meant in the text.  Reflection: People go to their parents for a variety of reasons but I believe the main reason is it's a reliable, comfortable, source of experience. Prompt: What is the most challenging part of working in a group? Discuss a time when a group assignment did not go as well as you planned and how you learned from that experience.

 Prompt Response: The most challenging part of working with a group is assuming everyone will do their part and if they do their part the quality of work will be up to par. I remember in middle school I was assigned a group project in 8th grade. The other two people knew I did my work so they did nothing, and if I did only my part my grade would suffer. What I learned from that is communicating with my teacher about my partners to ensure they do their part and my grade doesn’t suffer.  Summary: In class we were assigned a group project and Mr. Reese went over the instructions for such a project. He then assigned groups based off table, but that works out in my favor.  Reflection: I hate group projects unless they are with people I like, or I know they’ll do their part. Unreliable people make group projects miserable because you feel trapped having to do more work because they don’t wanna do work .

Prompt: What is the most challenging part of writing an essay for you? Is it brainstorming, organizing ideas, writing a strong thesis, or something else? How do you plan to overcome this challenge?

 Prompt Response: The hardest part about writing an essay for me is organizing my thoughts and sentences. I don't have a problem forming ideas but making sure they are all organized in a fashion that is understandable for others is the challenging bit. I plan to combat this by planning my body paragraph structures line by line so I do not get off track.  Summary: In class we went over the 5 steps of writing an essay along with doing an example of clustering as a class.  Reflection: I don’t really have trouble writing essays besides the organization and time management of it all. If not given the right amount of time I tend to skip steps which leads to the organization issue. 

Prompt: Describe a real moment in your life that felt like the beginning of a powerful story. Tell what happened, and why it felt like a turning point in your life?

 Prompt Response: I remember when I first moved out of my dad’s house back to my mom’s. This was essentially a fresh start and a remake of my character going into high school. There I promised myself to become more social and more comfortable in my own skin.  Summary: We listened to two more groups present their projects on Chapter 6 of Wild.  Reflection: You never know when something is going to be a new opportunity. Sometimes you have to take risks and step out of your comfort zone to make a leap. That leap can lead to the best things in life like making new friends and embracing adulthood.
